We are working on a new design with stripes for those who want a new millennium version of the Vesper Henley blazer. The team from Collier & Robinson, the makers of the Henley blazers, will be taking measurements at Vesper on Saturday, March 8, from 8:00-9:35 a.m. C&R will also help with information about ordering blazers.
If you can’t make the Vesper window, you are welcome to stroll over to Fairmount to get measured there from 10-noon on Saturday. Alternatively, a local tailor could also take your measurements using a form that can be found on their website: https://www.collierandrobinson.co.uk/order-form/.
Sadly, we announce the passing of two titans of Boathouse Row; Fred Duling, Sr., from Malta on February 26, 2025, and Carl Viola from Undine on February 27, 2025. We extend our sincere condolences to family and friends.
Fred was a 60-year-member of Malta. He devoted his many talents to the club and Boathouse Row at large, having created many stained glass trophies for the Turkey Trot as just one example. He won bronze medal at the world championships rowing the lightweight double with our friend Rick Stehlik. Since retiring from competitive racing, there was barely a masters race he didn't win. Sadly, we all know the tragic accident that occurred as he was decorating his beloved clubhouse 15 years ago that left him paralyzed. It is testament to his spirit and endurance that he persevered these years, enriching Boathouse Row and instilling skills and love of rowing to his young rowers. Link to obituary.
Carl was an enduring member of Undine and the rowing community. His wit, warmth and personality made all those visiting Undine feel welcome. He was no slouch in a boat, having been on the very first USA Dragon Boat Team in 1983 and again 1985. He was a daunting opponent with his partner, Greg Sciola, in the masters double. As stated in his obituary "Carl’s legacy will live on in the laughter he inspired, the love he shared, and the joy of a perfectly timed joke. If you hear a whistle in the wind, know that it’s him, reminding you to embrace life with a smile.” Link to obituary.
