Mary Wilson & Liz Martin Results from Selection Regatta

(TLDR: They have qualified!)

Vesper member, Mary Wilson, "MJ" competed in the Pan American Games qualifier with doubles partner, Liz Martin (Riverside BC, Boston, MA) in San Pedro de la Paz, Chile from April 15-19th. They placed third, 0.2 seconds behind Argentina and 1.7 seconds behind Chile. Of the race, Mary noted, it was a tremendous experience where the crew elevated race to race (within the race!), and created something greater than the sum of its parts. Liz commented on their final, "We had a great race today and executed our race plan exactly as we wanted to. We had the fastest second half of the race out of the field, which was a focus for us. It was really fun to be in such a competitive field and have close races. We're really excited to come back here in October. We're a new combination and are excited to get some more good training and time in the boat together in the next six months."

Thanks to all who helped with fundraising efforts for the race-it was of tremendous help and value.

Races can be rewatched on youtube:
LW2x Heat: starts at ~1hr 37'40

LW2x final. Starts at 2hr 32' ~40 seconds.

Mary and Liz have qualified for the Pan American games in October. Mary was one of 6 Philadelphia based athletes to compete. Team USA led the medal count with 4 gold (W1x, Mx, W2x, M2-) 3 silver (W4x,W2-,W4-) and 1 bronze (LW2x) with Chile also earning 8 medals (4 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze). Mary wanted to note the formative role Vesper has had in being part of the rowing journey for many national team members. Former Vesper members competing in the qualifier included Luke Rein (M2x, M4x), Cooper Hurley (M4-), Nick Ruggiero (M4-), Cristina Pretto (W2-, W4-) and Kate Horvat (W4x) ,  All US boats qualified for the games!

Doc Riggall Boat Christening

Vesper Boat Club hosted a christening of the 1964 boat, Donaratico on Sunday, December 12,2021. Approximately, 50 guests were in attendance including several Olympians.  The surviving bow section from the Donaratico Eight named after Vesper’s long-term President “Doc Riggall” is a very significant historical artifact. Considering the circumstances of its survival, we are fortunate and grateful to still have it; just as we are fortunate and grateful to still have Boyce Budd, Emory Clark, and Stan Cwiklinski join us fifty-eight years after they and their Vesper crewmates powered that great Donaratico Eight into the history books during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The bow section of the boat is now at home at the Vesper Boat Club.

Thanks to those who helped with the event, Nan Dormans, Alexis Franklin, Melissa Hilton, John Tiernay, Joe Henwood, Rick Stehlik, and Bonnie Mueller.
