Sarasota, FL— Vesper Boat Club’s Michelle Sechser, paired with Potomac Boat Club rower and Philly native Emily Schmeig, rowed to a bronze medal finish at the 2017 FISA World Rowing Championships, in Sarasota, FL.
In the final of the lightweight womens’ double sculls, the USA duo sat back in 5th position for the first third of the race, maintaining contact with the field.
The crew from New Zealand got out to an early, commanding lead, and controlled the race until just after the halfway point.
The Vesper/Potomac duo moved away from the field with the two leading boats, and a fight for which color medal would be awarded to which crews was established.
Going into the final quarter, the Romanian lightweight women’s double capitalized on the Kiwi’s fading momentum, and edged their bow into 1st position.
The USA and NZL boats went into 250m to go with nearly no separation, and both crews trailed the Romanians by less than a canvas.
At the line, a photo finish determined Romania 1st, New Zealand 2nd, and the United States LW2x in a very close 3rd place.
